Stool analysis routinely includes testing for occult blood because hidden bleeding can signal pathology in the GI tract even when the stool looks normal. Occult blood refers to small amounts of blood that aren’t visible to the eye. Detecting it helps screen for conditions such as ulcers, diverticulosis, hemorrhoids, polyps, inflammatory bowel disease, or colorectal cancer. The common approaches are guaiac-based tests, which sense heme via peroxidase activity, and immunochemical tests that detect human hemoglobin. Because results can be influenced by diet, medications, or intermittent bleeding, tests are often paired with pretest guidance and, if positive, followed by further evaluation like endoscopy. This broad utility is why occult blood testing is considered a component of stool analysis.
